Baptist Ministries of Togo (BMOTogo) was founded to encourage Baptist pastors in Togo, West Africa. Our goal is to see the Gospel spread in Togo and to see people come to faith in Christ and grow in the Word.
The ministry began in 2008 as a result of the needs that Loy Baxter saw while she was living there and attending one of the churches. Loy had gone to Togo for a two-year stay to teach missionary children and was drawn to the Christian community, enjoying fellowship with them. After returning to the U.S. and sharing her experiences, some friends decided to raise funds to help with various needs.
BMOTogo works in partnership with 6 Baptist churches and 4 village churches in the Kara Region of Northern Togo. The six are Tomde, Feign, Soumdina, Piladjoua, Tchandida and Lama Bou. The village churches are Tcheou, Sanyanglao, Gningbanda, and Koudjodolou. The work is an indigenous work led by local pastors. Our part is to encourage and support the pastors as they seek to teach the Word to their congregations. Pastoral funding is used for family, housing, and medical needs and to help people in their congregations. This could not have been accomplished without the help of Batcho Komlan, who serves as our administrator in Togo. (Learn more about the Pastors.)
Village outreach projects involve evangelism and church planting. The pastors of established churches travel to surrounding rural villages to take the Gospel where people have not heard about Christ. The pastors take teams from their congregations to villages to conduct evangelistic campaigns. This includes showing of films, preaching and visiting homes. Our organization helps to fund these campaigns.
Fledgling churches usually start with weekly Bible studies out under the trees or in a local school building. Young men from the local Bible Institute often work in these village churches as leaders and teachers, and we help with their expenses. Ministry to the elderly is an intregral part of villiage outreach. In addition to home visits, this includes food distribution and healthcare. (Learn more about Village Outreach.)
BMOTogo has been involved in many church construction projects, including permanent structures, temporary mud brick buildings, reed-sided structures, and shelters for children’s classes. BMOTogo has also provided funding for digging a well and installing electricity. Large projects like these are accomplished in phases, as funding permits. Special projects support the ministry of the pastors by helping to address the spiritual and physical needs of their congregations. They may be one-time purchases or ongoing efforts. Special projects include purchasing song books, church benches (pews), sound amplification systems, computers, Bibles and Bible-study materials, and solar-powered radios for playing recordings of the New Testament. BMOTogo is a volunteer-run, 501c3 Christian organization. Funding is obtained through direct donations and through volunteer-led fundraising event. Except for wire transfer fees, 100% of the funds we receive are sent to Togo. Board members always prayerfully consider how to distribute funds amongst the pastors and projects.
